Flamefall – Rosaria Munda

Rosaria Munda has made even more characters for me to care deeply about. Great. Like I didn’t have enough feels and fear for my old ones. Honestly, it is the theme of this book: MORE. The world is a lot bigger, and we get a POV inside Julia’s society. And there’s so much going on, and there are so many impossible choices and this book is agonizing to read, yet you CAN’T STOP. It’s impossible, and people are on different sides when I just want them to be happy. If you can’t tell, this means I ABSOLUTELY FREAKING LOVE THIS BOOK.

And that ending… aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah! It is evil, it truly is evil. It’s basically a plottwist cliffhanger. Yes these exist now and I need book 3.

Ok I’ll try to be more coherent now. We start off where book 1 stopped, with Lee being disillusioned by the leader of the new regime, as he tried to get him killed. Multiple times. And the society seems to be breaking as hunger enters the world and only the people with gold/silver bracelets get enough food, the rest is deemed disposable. Lee hates the old regime, but this new regime is far from the equality it promised, and his guilt and grief are huge. When another rebellion begins to form, he might wanna join them. Although it just seems like there are no good sides at all.

Meanwhile Annie has the heavy burden of leadership. She still believes the regime is basically good, and also makes her own plans. She tries to be smart, but for her it might also mean there are no good choices. And some are really bad, but she tries so hard and I love her for it.

On the other side of the sea, in New Pythos, Griff is a low servant, yet has a dragon because there are not enough highborns. They are treated horribly though, and he tries to find a way to live, but is thwarted at every point. The only good thing is another rider called Delos, they have an amazing chemistry, but he can’t protect Griff. So Griff also has some important and impossible choices to make… you see the theme, right? Anyway, I didn’t think I’d love another addition because I really want to read about Annie and Lee, but the chapters were so interesting and intense, and I now love Griff too. Which is a problem, as my beloved characters get hurt. A lot. I love everything about this book but please can we not hurt the characters so much? All. The. Feels. Ok that’s a good thing but still they deserve a break.

The writing style is so well done, and the political issues too! I love when it gets complicated. But the plot is fast paced too, so while there’s so much depth, it never gets boring. This series is such an intelligent series, with amazing themes. It really makes you think about what choices you would make, and how a society should work. Combined with a bit of Greek/Latin inspiration, and let’s not forget the DRAGONS and a fast paced plot, I cannot recommend this series enough. And I really wish my review is a little more coherent, that it could do justice to this book, but this is draft number 3 and it just does not get better than this. Please just read this book!

Rating: 5 out of 5.
